Weekly Update January 17th - January 23rd

"My Peace I Give Unto You"

 - Howard W. Hunter Lesson 2

Question to Ponder:  How do we turn things over to the Lord in the midst of our very hardest trials?"

Doctrine:

“Peace can come to an individual only by an unconditional surrender—surrender to him who is the Prince of peace, who has the power to confer peace.”

There is but one guiding hand in the universe, only one truly infallible light, one unfailing beacon to the world. That light is Jesus Christ, the light and life of the world, the light which one Book of Mormon prophet described as “a light that is endless, that can never be darkened.” (Mosiah 16:9.)

Invitation to Action:

As we search for the shore of safety and peace, whether we be individual women and men, families, communities, or nations, Christ is the only beacon on which we can ultimately rely. He is the one who said of his mission, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6.) …
Consider, for example, this instruction from Christ to his disciples. He said, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” (Matt. 5:44.)
When we try to help those who have offended us, when we pray for those who have unrighteously used us, our lives can be beautiful. We can have peace when we come into a unity with the Spirit and with each other as we serve the Lord and keep his commandments.
In this world of confusion and rushing, temporal progress, we need to return to the simplicity of Christ. … We need to study the simple fundamentals of the truths taught by the Master and eliminate the controversial. Our faith in God needs to be real and not speculative. The restored gospel of Jesus Christ can be a dynamic, moving influence, and true acceptance gives us a meaningful, religious experience. One of the great strengths of the Mormon religion is this translation of belief into daily thinking and conduct. This replaces turmoil and confusion with peace and tranquility.

Promised Blessings:

We can find this peace now in a world of conflict if we will but accept his great gift and his further invitation: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matt. 11:28–29.)
This peace shelters us from the worldly turmoil. The knowledge that God lives, that we are his children, and that he loves us soothes the troubled heart. The answer to the quest lies in faith in God and in his Son, Jesus Christ. This will bring peace to us now and in the eternity to follow.

Reminders:

Who am I? – I am a member of a family –
Thursday, February 4, 2016 @ 7:00 p.m.

For our February activity, we will focus on our roles in the family.  Sister Bonnie D. Parkin has stated,

“As members of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is our blessing and our responsibility to nurture and sustain the family unit.”

Our roles in the family change and develop over time, so we have asked several sisters to share what it means to them to be a member of a family at different stages of life.  They will also share some creative ways they show love to their family members.  In addition, we will discuss what it means to be a member of a ward family, and learn about how we can show love to our ancestors.  Following our meeting, we will have a tasting table with some delicious and creative food ideas you can share with your families.

This year for our Relief Society Activities, we are focusing on two questions:  “Who am I” and “What is my mission?”  For our January Relief Society Activity, we talked about our Patriarchal Blessings.  Sister Beck taught, “When you receive your blessing, you get a glimpse of eternity.  You begin to see a picture of what lies ahead for you because your blessing will refer to your eternal purpose and journey.”

President James E. Faust taught that each patriarchal blessing is inspired.   “The patriarchal blessing is, in essence, a prophetic blessing and utterance. . . . A patriarchal blessing . . . can give us a star to follow, which is a personal revelation from God to each individual. . . . Our patriarchal blessing will be an anchor to our souls. . . . It is a sacred guideline of counsel, promises, and information from the Lord.”

We encourage you to take the time to read and ponder your patriarchal blessings and to seek personal inspiration and revelation as you strive to more fully answer the question, “Who am I and what is my mission?”

Candy Graham:

My favorite color is "mint" green.  I love hanging out with my friends.  We have a "whopping" good time together.  I love flirting with "Good and Plenty" of "hot" boys.  I love to dance and think it would be "fun" to learn how to "dirt bike" and "snow" board.  I am afraid of "dark" allies but think it would be "cool" to read minds.  If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life it would be anything from "Taco Bell."  Everyone thinks it is funny when I am an "airhead" but really I am a "sweetheart!"  After high school I want to attend BYU - "Idaho" and "Skor" a "Payday" of a "Million Dollars" working as an occupational therapist or hygienist.
