Weekly Update of September 21st - 27th

Faith

Lesson Review:

"In the World But Not of the World"
Joseph Fielding Smith - Lesson 19

Doctrine:

The Lord expects us to forsake the evils of the world and live as becometh Saints.

We are living in an evil and wicked world. But while we are in the world, we are not of the world. We are expected to overcome the world and to live as becometh saints. … We have greater light than the world has, and the Lord expects more of us than he does of them.

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:15–17.)

If we are living the religion which the Lord has revealed and which we have received, we do not belong to the world. We should have no part in all its foolishness. We should not partake of its sins and its errors—errors of philosophy and errors of doctrine, errors in regard to government, or whatever those errors may be—we have no part in it.
The only part we have is the keeping of the commandments of God. That is all, being true to every covenant and every obligation that we have entered into and taken upon ourselves.

Invitation to Action:

"Brethren and sisters, let us keep the commandments of God as they have been revealed. Let us set the example before the people of the earth, that they, seeing our good works, may feel to repent and receive the truth and accept the plan of salvation, that they may receive salvation in the celestial kingdom of God. "

Promised Blessings:

The blessings promised to the faithful are far greater than the temporary pleasures of the world.

"If we shall search diligently, pray always, be believing, and walk uprightly, we have the Lord’s promise that all things shall work together for our good [see D&C 90:24]. This is not a promise that we shall be free from the trials and problems of life, for this probationary state is designed to give us experience and difficult and conflicting situations.

Life never was intended to be easy, but the Lord has promised that he will cause all trials and difficulties to result in our good. He will give us strength and ability to overcome the world and to stand firm in the faith despite all opposition. It is a promise that we shall have peace in our hearts despite the tumults and troubles of the world. And above all, it is a promise that when this life is over, we shall qualify for eternal peace in the presence of Him whose face we have sought, whose laws we have kept, and whom we have chosen to serve."

FAMILY

Preparing our Children for Conference

With less than 2 weeks to conference it is time now to start preparing ourselves and our families so we can make the most of the time we get to listen to our prophet and leaders.

“It is when children are young that parents must be innovative in helping them develop good habits regarding conference participation. As our children are given opportunities to observe and learn the role of these special witnesses, they will receive a spiritual confirmation of the sacred calling of their Church leaders, and they will feel a deeper love for and interest in these leaders and their message.”

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Presidency of the Seventy, taught of many different ways we can prepare for conference and make the most of the experience.  His talk “Teaching Our Children to Love the Prophets,”  was printed in the Ensign, Apr. 1996.

Do you have some great ideas that work for your family during Conference weekend?  Email them to b4thrs@gmail.com.  I will share those ideas next week.

"It is a sociological fact that women need women.  We need deep and satisfying and loyal friendships with each other."  Sister Hinckley was right; oh, how we need each other."  (Sister Bonnie Oscarson)

Sweeping the Earth as with a Flood:

Following Elder Bednar’s invitation to “sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth,” we are going to include a “Social Media” section in our Relief Society Blog.  This week we are including a link to the Media Library on lds.org.  This is a good place to start learning about how you can use social media to “flood the earth with positive thoughts, imagery, and messages.”

“May our many small, individual efforts produce a steady rainfall of righteousness and truth that gradually swells a multitude of streams and rivers  - and ultimately becomes a flood that sweeps the earth.”  (Elder David A. Bednar)

Week of September 8th

Faith

Lesson Review:

Flood the Earth With Goodness- Elder Bednar's talk at BYU Education Week

Doctrine:

In this greatest and last of all gospel dispensations, “a whole and complete and perfect union, and welding together of dispensations, and keys, and powers, and glories should take place, and be revealed from the days of Adam even to the present time. And not only this, but those things which have never been revealed from the foundation of the world, but have been kept hid from the wise and the prudent, shall be revealed … in this, the dispensation of the fulness of times” (D&C 128:18).

The Prophet Joseph further expounded: “All the ordinances and duties that ever have been required by the Priesthood, under the directions and commandments of the Almighty in any of the dispensations, shall all be had in the last dispensation … , bringing to pass the restoration spoken of by the mouth of all the Holy Prophets” (Teachings: Joseph Smith, 511).

As the Apostle Paul declared, “In the dispensation of the fulness of times [God will] gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him” (Ephesians 1:10).

Invitation to Action:

"My beloved brothers and sisters, what has been accomplished thus far in this dispensation communicating gospel messages through social media channels is a good beginning—but only a small trickle. I now extend to you the invitation to help transform the trickle into a flood. Beginning at this place on this day, I exhort you to sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth—messages that are authentic, edifying, and praiseworthy—and literally to sweep the earth as with a flood." - Elder Bednar

Promised Blessings:

"We have been and are blessed in so many ways; and where much is given, much is required. As an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, I invoke this blessing upon you: that you may come to understand more fully the spiritual significance and blessing of living in the dispensation of the fulness of times, that you may have eyes to see clearly both the possibilities and the pitfalls of the remarkable technologies that are available to us today, that you may increase in your capacity to use these inspired tools appropriately, and that you may receive inspiration and guidance about the role you should play in helping to sweep the earth as with a flood of truth and righteousness. As you press forward in this holy work, I promise you will be blessed in mortality in the individual, specific, and necessary ways that will prepare you for eternity. I so bless you." - Elder Bednar
