(April 20, 1944 - February 20, 2016)
Lorraine Horton Ferguson, 71, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016, in her home in Rexburg. She was born April 20, 1944, in Provo, Utah, and raised by her loving parents, Elkington Davis Horton and Erma Wilson, in Springville, Utah. She was the youngest of four children, the beloved baby of her family. Her sisters Mary Jane McQuivey (Richard) and Janice Coyne, as well as Janice’s husband John, preceded her in death. Her brother Don Horton (Floss) resides in Springville, Utah. Lorraine graduated from Springville High School, where she sang with the A Cappella Choir and participated in the Pep Club, Future Homemakers of America, and the Steno Club. She also joined the Novelty Circle, where she made lifelong friends who still gather yearly. After high school, Lorraine worked for a year to earn money for college. She completed one year at Utah State University as well as night classes at the University of Utah and BYU. She also attended and graduated from Classique Finishing and Modeling School in Salt Lake City. On March 16, 1970, Lorraine married John Ferguson, of Provo, Utah, in Belton, Texas, where John was stationed at Fort Hood in the US Army. She gained two daughters by marriage, Gina and Jan. John and Lorraine welcomed two more daughters into their family, Lisa in 1973 and Amy in 1978. Their marriage was solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple in 1990. Lorraine loved being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Primary, and the Young Women, which she especially loved, as well as stake and ward Relief Societies, and in the Rexburg Temple. She also loved serving with John as an advisor to a Young Single Adult ward, where they developed many dear friendships. She loved learning and was an avid reader of history, fiction, self-improvement, scriptures and religious books. She worked diligently to compile treasured personal and family histories. Lorraine was a member of the Read and Share Book Club for over 30 years. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Lorraine was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting and needlepoint. She loved nature and treasured time spent in Island Park and in her yard, where she carefully tended beautiful flowerbeds. She was skilled in business and owned several Diet Center franchises in southern California as well as Heaven’s Best Carpet Cleaning franchises in Arizona. She worked as a secretary in Madison School District, one year at Madison High School and two years at Madison Middle School. She enjoyed serving students and the camaraderie of her colleagues. Mothering was Lorraine’s life work and her greatest joy, surpassed perhaps only by grandmothering. To know Lorraine was to love her. Her natural warmth and genuine care for others endeared her to so many. She was gracious, generous, selfless and kind, with a gift for truly loving and caring for others.
