"Seek the Spirit in All You Do"
Chapter 12 Ezra Taft Benson Lesson

Doctrine:

“We must remain open and sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost in all aspects of our lives.”

Spirituality—being in tune with the Spirit of the Lord—is the greatest need we all have. We should strive for the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost all the days of our lives. When we have the Spirit, we will love to serve, we will love the Lord, and we will love those with whom we serve, and those whom we serve.

Invitation to Action:

Spirituality—being in tune with the Spirit of the Lord—is the greatest need we all have. We should strive for the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost all the days of our lives. When we have the Spirit, we will love to serve, we will love the Lord, and we will love those with whom we serve, and those whom we serve.

This latter-day work is spiritual. It takes spirituality to comprehend it, to love it, and to discern it. Therefore seek the Spirit in all you do. Keep it with you continually. That is our challenge.

Pray to Heavenly Father to bless you with His Spirit at all times. We often call the Spirit the Holy Ghost. … The Holy Ghost helps you to choose the right. The Holy Ghost will protect you from evil. He whispers to you in a still, small voice to do right. When you do good, you feel good, and that is the Holy Ghost speaking to you. The Holy Ghost is a wonderful companion. He is always there to help you.

How do we obtain the Spirit? “By the prayer of faith,” says the Lord [D&C 42:14]. Therefore, we must pray with sincerity and real intent. We must pray for increased faith and pray for the Spirit to accompany our teaching. We should ask the Lord for forgiveness.

Search the scriptures diligently in personal study every day. Daily scripture study invites the Spirit.

Read and study the scriptures. The scriptures should be studied in the home with fathers and mothers taking the lead and setting the example. The scriptures are to be comprehended by the power of the Holy Ghost, for the Lord has given this promise to His faithful and obedient: “Thou mayest know the mysteries and peaceable things.” (D&C 42:61.)

We cannot know God and Jesus without studying about them and then doing their will. This course leads to additional revealed knowledge which, if obeyed, will eventually lead us to further truths. If we follow this pattern, we will receive further light and joy, eventually leading into God’s presence, where we, with Him, will have a fulness.

Promised Blessings:

Listen to the spiritual promise: “All saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, … shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures.” (D&C 89:18, 19; italics added.)

Some have thought this promise was contingent on just keeping the provisions of the Word of Wisdom. But you will notice we must walk in obedience to all the commandments. Then we shall receive specific spiritual promises. This means we must obey the law of tithing, keep the Sabbath day holy, keep morally clean and chaste, and obey all other commandments.

When we do all this, the promise is: They “shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures.” (D&C 89:19.)

FAMILY

Sister Linda K. Burton, General President of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave some inspiring council to young mothers and other busy LDS Church members relating to family history. “As we live—raising children, working jobs, caring for parents, fulfilling Church callings, and serving in our communities—we are putting together the puzzle of our lives, creating our own family history. Try adding small and simple things to intensify the Spirit of Elijah in your life and draw your family closer on both sides of the veil.”

She went on to say, “Think of the things you’re already doing and just make a small tweak. Piece by piece the puzzle will come together. If you don’t know how to fit in family history ask the Lord to help you.”

Here are a few ways you put her ideas to work:

Family Home Evening Fun

Energize your family with a fun family history lesson for family home evening. Visit LDS.org to discover lesson plans, videos, and activities that can help bring your family history to life.

It’s Sunday Afternoon—Help!

Sunday afternoon can feel like an eternity for parents AND children. Discover ideas for transforming those long afternoon hours into enriching family history time that will pay eternal dividends.

Discover Your Family Tree

Visit your family tree on FamilySearch.org to see what has already been added and preserved. You might find ancestor photos or stories that you’ve never seen before. What you find can be shared with family near and far. If your tree is a little thin, simple tools help you add what you know.
Sister Burton concluded, “He’ll (The Lord) show you the small and simple things that will draw your family closer together on both sides of the veil.”
